The Locket

§ Another poem dealing with his family – mother is central figure – again conveys character effectively and vividly by using condensed phrases that highlight personality traits
§ Form of lament for his mother – form and content united – musical, song-like qualities to the poem – assonance, alliteration, etc.
§ Poet is acutely aware of guilt he is made feel responsible for – humorous tone in describing his “double blunder” softens the blow of her perverse and unnatural behaviour
§ Later attempt to re-establish a relationship – sexual innuendo – romantic undertone – perhaps suggesting he is replacement or surrogate for his father – mother discourages the visits – in order to stifle her maternal instincts – Montague continues to be the victim of “the harsh logic”, her way of thinking caused by her misfortunate life
§ Final stanza – gentler tone – pauses convey poet’s amazement at discovery that mother cherished her child – secret gesture of unrequited and unspoken love – love Montague offered was in a way retuned but only after her death – this is why he calls it a “mysterious blessing”
